These are drugs that are sometimes used to assist a sexual assault. Sexual assault is any type of sexual activity that a person does not agree to. It can include inappropriate touching, vaginal penetration, sexual intercourse, rape, and attempted rape. Because of the effects of these drugs, victims may be physically helpless, unable to refuse sex, and can't remember what happened. The drugs often have no color, smell, or taste and are easily added to flavored drinks without the victim's knowledge. There are at least three date rape drugs:

* GHB (gamma hydroxybutyric acid)
* Rohypnol (flunitrazepam)
* Ketamine (ketamine hydrochloride)

Although we use the term "date rape," most experts prefer the term "drug-facilitated sexual assault." These drugs have been used to help people commit other crimes, like robbery and physical assault, and have been used on both men and women.

Two drugs often referred to as date rape drugs (more accurately "rape drugs" or "predatory drugs" since it isn't about a date and the same 40-plus drugs used in rapes can be used for robbery as well) are GHB, also known as gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid, and benzodiazepines (such as flunitrazepam, also known as Rohypnol or "roofies"); however, alcohol still remains the drug most frequently-implicated in substance-assisted sexual assault.

well, Clubbers' drug GHB, which has also been linked with date rapes, will be outlawed from midnight on Monday.

Dealers in the drug will face up to five years in jail and possession will carry up to two years as it becomes a class C drug, Home Office minister Caroline Flint said.

Campaigners welcomed the move, saying it would give police more powers to prevent drug-assisted rapes.

The drug acts as an "upper" in small doses, but larger amounts produce an anaesthetic effect which can put people into a coma and even cause their death.

Although GHB is known as a 'date rape' and clubbers' drug, it is also used by some body-builders to increase their muscles.

Also nicknamed liquid ecstasy, it is potentially lethal when mixed with other substances, particularly alcohol.

It is currently not illegal to possess GHB, but unlicensed supply can be an offence under the Medicines Act.

The drug is usually sold in liquid form - a 30ml plastic bottle costs about £15 - but can also be bought as a powder.
