If you don't exercise much, your body doesn't have much muscle. So any extra weight you carry is fat, like the tummy you mention. The best way to lose that fat is to exercise and build muscle. The best way to start out is to walk, ride a bike, or swim. Swimming might be best depending on how bad your knees are. Work up to 30-45 minutes, 4-5 times a week, working hard enough that you are breathing heavy.
