The causes of dysathria includes stroke, traumatic brain injury, tumor of the brain, degenerative disorders like Parkinson's disease, anyotrophic lateral sclerosis and multiple sclerosis, excessive use of alcohol or medicines like sedatives. The root of the cause should be corrected to treat dystheria. Apart, treating dysarthria generally needs some specific exercises to improve articulation, volume or pitch quality and voice. The patient should be observed for use of any strategies to improve clearity of the speech like breathing before speaking, keeping eye contact or looking to the person whilst talking, slowing down of the speech rate, using shorter sentences to speak with regular pause, etc. The patients should be aided in getting a proper speech at the schools(if a young child) and at the home. If the condition is severe and do not recover, then the alternative methods should be used to communicate with him. The aids to communicate him may include gestures, specific signs, objects, pictorials, diagrams, etc.
