It is sometimes referred to as a pigpen or "pig parlor." Pigsties are generally fenced areas of bare dirt and/or mud. It is caused by bacteria that normally live peacefully on the eyelid skin surface. It is a red, painful lump on the edge or inside of your eyelid that may look like a boil or a pimple.

If a style or chalazion gets very large, the doctor may need to pierce (lance) it so it can drain and heal.

An antibiotic ointment may be prescribed if the stye does not clear.

Paracetamol will also help relieve the pain of a stye.

Staphylococcal bacteria mainly cause eye sty; there may be some other organisms responsible for this infection. This is a respiratory tract bacterium, found in nose and it gets transferred to eye by contact. When you first rub your nose and then instantly touch your eyes, this bacteria gets transferred. Diabetic patients too can have this problem. If your immune system is weak, these bacteria can attack your eyes. Any cosmetic eye products, like mascara and eyeliner can also irritate eyelids.

Treating Eye-Stye

Though eye sty is not seriously contagious but can transfer from person to person if immune system is not strong.
Eye sty can be outside the eyelid and gets healed in short time without any harm but when it is inside of eyelid, it forms pus filled cells which are to be treated by physician only. Most of the eye sties get healed up after five days. But you can speed up the healing process by applying some methods.
1 Wash the eye sty by warm water several times a day to prevent spreading of infection.
2 Take 2 cups of water and boil some acacia leaves in it to prepare hot compress for eyelids.
3 Pour prescribed antibiotic eye drops to fight infection.
4 If eye sty is serious and not responding to any treatment at home, you may require surgical drainage.
5 Grate potatoes and apply as poultice over eyes to reduce swelling
6 Take one tbsp of coriander seed and boil it in a cupful of water. Wash your eyes with this water up to 3-4 times.
7 Rub a clove over sill using water and apply this mixture at stye to dry infection.
8 Take 2-3 granules of alum and dissolve in a cup of water. Wash your eyes with this solution.
