They're good to start a workout to losen yourself up, and good for weight maintanence.
For weight loss, try a more weight-bearing exercise, though, like walking, stair-climbing, or elliptical machines. Calories are used more quickly because you're using more muscles and expanding more calories just to stablize your bodyweight, let alone the actual motion of the exercise.
PS: strength training REALLY helps to burn body fat.
