Volcanoes are found in many parts of the world. Most of them though are found around the Pacific Ocean. This part of the world is called the Ring of Fire. The Ring of Fire is a ring of volcanoes that are around the Pacific Ocean. The Hawaiian islands and the Hawaiian volcanoes are closest to the middle of the Ring of Fire.
Composite volcanoes are steep sided volcanoes. They consist of layers of ash and lava. Composite volcanoes are very explosive because the lava is very viscous (thick). Significant pressure builds within these volcanoes and often results in spectacular eruptions. Examples of composite volcanoes include Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines and Mount Vesuvius in Italy.
