For Indian roads manual transmission is better. We hardly get to drive beyond the 3rd gear on city roads. Auto transmission under these condition would not only be stressed and give u a reduced life it will also lead to excess fuel consumption....when it comes to fuel effeciency, manual is better. but ease of driving through traffic - automatic is a lot better. u only have to worry about accelerator

Ya manual transmission cars get better MPG.If you want to be more environmentally friendly the choice between a manual and an automatic shouldnt really be a consideration.
