On 26 Jan 1893 there was a match played between Lord Hawke's XI in India at the Madan Mohan Malaviya Stadium, Allahabad. This is the first recorded first-class match played by India. The Indian team was captained by a certain George MacLagan Chesney, a Mussoorie born Englishman.
1911, an Indian team went on their first official tour of England, but only played English county teams and not the English cricket team. In their first match against Oxford University at Christ Church College Ground, Oxford, the Indian team was captained by Bhupendrasingh Rajindersingh, also known as the Maharaja of Patiala.
India's first test captain was C.K. Nayudu in 1932. In ODIs Ajit Wadekar was the first Indian captain in the 1974 Prudential Trophy against England.
