The recruitment to this Service is made on the basis of annual Examination called "W.B.C.S. (Exe.) etc. Examination", conducted by The Public Service Commission, West Bengal, which is a three-stage competitive selection process consisting of a preliminary exam, a main exam, and an interview. The examination is extremely challenging and is considered to be the toughest examination at the state level. Apart from W.B.C.S.(Executive) many other top posts in different departments of Government of West Bengal including Police Service, Commercial Tax Service, Excise Service etc. are also recruited through the same examination.
The selected W.B.C.S.(Exe) officers are included in the state cadre of civil service and appointed as "Deputy Magistrate & Deputy Collector" in the Pay Scale of INR (Rs.)8000-275-13500 [Revised ROPA'09- Pay Band 4 :Rs.9000-40500 Grade Pay Rs.5400, Starting Basic Salary Rs.21000 + Other Allowances]. The Probation period for the service is for two years. Professional Trainings are conducted at "Administrative Training Institute" [ATI] Saltlake - Kolkata, SIPRD - Kalyani and ARTI - Salboni, and then at different Districts and Sub-Divisions.
