They are two completely different languages; VB is developed by Microsoft for use on their own OS, and Java is developed by Sun and is cross-compatible with different OSs.
Visual Basic (VB) is a third-generation event driven programming language and associated development environment from Microsoft for its COM programming model. Visual Basic was derived from BASIC and enables the rapid application development (RAD) of graphical user interface (GUI) applications, access to databases using DAO, RDO, or ADO, and creation of ActiveX controls and objects. Scripting languages such as VBA and VBScript are syntactically similar to Visual Basic, but perform differently.
Java is a programming language originally developed by Sun Microsystems and released in 1995 as a core component of Sun Microsystem's Java platform. The language derives much of its syntax from C and C++ but has a simpler object model and fewer low-level facilities. Java applications are typically compiled to bytecode that can run on any Java virtual machine (JVM) regardless of computer architecture.
