There are permanent bench marks fixed by "Geological Survey of India " at various locations all over the country. To find the value of level of a new place, above mean sea level ( as it is known as ) level is carried ( as it is called technically ) from permanent bench mark by means of a levelling instrument. to the place of which level ( i.e. height ) above mean sea level is required. Generally in India Height above Mean Sea Level is written on the name board of every Railway Station on both ends of railway platform
