Panbhu,
Before in 1930's and 40's the only sport which was played at international level and with more public interest was Hockey so public interest back then was too little in other sports.
Later cricket and subsidiary games have been included in international arena after independence, as a result cricket as we see now has generated more fans than any other sports in India. There are many reason for these things as cricket is played on a huge ground with capacity of more than 50000 people the fans can come out in huge numbers.
Other sport like badminton and weight lifting are more of seen on television and just enjoyed in small scale as these sports are just a 2 min sports where a person comes and performs. Different sports like boxing do attract people but that to is limited as these games only last for an hr or so with less capacity or viewers at rings. Hence other than cricket and at some point Hockey other sports are not so famous like them.
