What is a long-hop in cricket?  

A slow juicy short ball bowled. It is so short and slow that the batsman has ample time to hit it anywhere he feels like! It is a rank bad bowl and the bowler and the captain both tear their hair when a bowler bowls one!

It describes a short delivery which is not especially fast, which is thus easy for the batsman to hit because he has plenty of time to observe the speed and direction of the ball after the bounce and choose his shot accordingly.

When a bowler bowls a flighted delivery, sometimes, by mistake, the ball will be a short of length without much speed, which would be convinient for the batsman to score a four or even a six. The batsman would have enough time to judge the speed as well as the direction of the delivery so that he could rock back and place it wherever he wants. When the same delivery comes with more height, it would not be possible for the batsman to drive or pull that ball, because of the height. Only on rare occasions, the batsmen will be feed with long hops.

A long hop is a type of inadvertent delivery in the sport of cricket. It describes a short delivery which is not especially fast, which is thus easy for the batsman to hit because he has plenty of time to observe the speed and direction of the ball after the bounce and choose his shot accordingly. In contrast, a fast short delivery which bounces high (to the batsman's chest or higher) is termed a bouncer and is often bowled deliberately because it is difficult to safely hit, due to the height at which it reaches the batsman. A fast ball which pitches short but (due to the vagaries of the wicket surface) does not bounce high is very difficult to defend against, for the batsman will usually expect the ball to bounce high in this situation; this can often lead to the batsman being out bowled or lbw when they leave a ball which appeared to be rising over the stumps but stayed low. Such deliveries are not called long hops, due to the difficulty they cause the batsman. The term 'long hop', like the term 'Full toss', has passed into slang as a description of an argument or insult which is easily refuted or responded to.

a rank bad delivery in the game which is short of length and dose not have the pace either. the batsman can wait for the ball and rocking back he could dispatch it to the fence.

A poor delivery by a pace bowler. No bowler likes to send down a long hop. It is a half-paced delivery pitched short and is usually dispatched with ease by the batsman to the boundary. Bowlers who are out of practise or tired are most likely to bowl a long-hop. Strangely, the long-hop sometimes takes unmerited wickets as the batsman's eyes light up at seeing an easy ball, and he hits the ball straight to a fielder.
