Well RIcha, Free hit is one of the new concept incorporated in general playing of cricket by the ICC's technical committee to break the stalemate creeping into the game and bring out a bit more excitement and unpredictable nature of the game.

This is a special delivery which is a result of a bowler bowling a front-foot no ball, in the immediate next ball, the batsman cannot be ruled out in any dismissal modes, other than run out, handling the ball, hitting the ball twice and obstructing the field. This freedom enables the batsman to play a powerful shot without the fear of getting out caught, bowled or leg before. For this reason, the delivery immediately after a front-foot no ball is called a free hit. This concept is incorporated at present in one day internationals and twenty20 matches only.

In recent ICC T20 world the "Free hit" rule was introduced by the ICC. Free hit is given when a bowler balls a No ball. If a bowler over steps the crease and bowl a ball then it is treated as No ball. According to the cricket rules batsmen cannot be given out if the ball in no ball and the batting team gets an extra run and another ball in the same over.
But the new rule had added the Free hit as well to the no ball. That means after declaring the no ball, umpire rotate a single hand to declare the free hit and immediately the free hit ball has to be bowled by the bowler. The batsman gets out then he will not be given out and batsmen can be out only by run out. That means batsmen will get another extra ball and he can hit anywhere in the ground...

Richa, A 'Free hit' is given to the batsmen in the ODI's and also in T-20 if a bowler bowls from outside the crease.
The following ball is counted a s a free hit.
In the free hit ball a batsmen cannot be out by any means other than run out.

In a free hit if the same batsmen is facing the ball then no fielding changes can be done. But if the runner is on strike in the free hit ball then fielding changes are allowed.

This rule was started in the ICC Inaugural t-20 world cup and there on in ODI's too, In test match it is not implied.

Hey RICHA , ' FREE HIT ' is new rule introduced in ONE DAYS due to advent of T-20 . Whenever bowler bowls NO BALL ( by only oversteping the line and not by HEIGHT ABOVE BATSMAN REACH ) then next ball be treated as FREE HIT. According to rules of ICC batsman can't be given out on that delivery except RUNOUT. Waise abtak most FREE HIT batsmanne waste hi kiye hai.
