My vote is for Avast out of those two choices "Avast or AVG"... personally I use the latest Eset's NOD32 AV... it's found stuff that Avast didn't on my comp. Mainly "4,564 infected files" - stupid me for opening a file before scanning but even afterwards when I scanned my comp, Avast failed to identify the "unknown" w32 worm... NOD32's hueristics picked it up and took care of it. I also find that NOD32's online scanner is more effective than that of Avast. I won't even talk about AVG, that program is weak at best. Oh, and one thing Avast has got that's cool (on win2000/XP) is "boot-time" scanning. I just wish NOD32 had that feature.
Get NOD32 (even with it's hokey UI) and feel safe and secure because it's the best IMHO. :)
For firewall protection, I use Sygate Personal Firewal Pro 5.6 ... so far so good. I love it compared to all the others out there that I've tried. It's the best and easiest to use IMHO also.
