PC3200 RAM with your current processor, and it’ll even work if you set its speed to 266 MHz to match the front side bus frequency of your XP2400+ processor. In fact, your system would probably work best if you do so. Changing your RAM speed to 400 MHz won’t make your system work any better, because it can’t go any faster than your processor will run it, now, will it? Run your family sedan down a racetrack and it’ll still only run as fast as a family sedan!
In fact, if you operate your RAM at 400 MHz and your processor at 266 MHz front side bus, you'll most likely suffer a drop in performance, because the processor will be ‘out of sync’ with the RAM, and will be constantly waiting for a ‘break in the traffic’ so it can jump in and send the information it has ready!
But if you intend to upgrade your system RAM, I’d certainly suggest that PC3200 modules are the best choice of purchase. Having them will, as you infer, get you ‘ready’ for a later processor upgrade. Adding an XP3200+ to your motherboard and RAM combination will see you with considerably improved performance, and if you match them with a high performance display card you’d have a nice system indeed!
For your question about CAS latency figures for your RAM, perhaps it would be a good idea to first read this bulletin from The RAM guy at Corsair Micro.
