Performance wise both should be same, provided you use two matching (similar) rams if you use 2x512 MB.

I will go for 2x 512 MB instead of 1x1 GB since I am getting some redundancy benifit... as in case i RAM fails I can still run my PC with 1 RAM.

Using 1 GB RAM in a single slot gives better performance, also you can upgrade your RAM to another 1 GB in future. Please check for your mother board whether it supports 1 GB RAM.

Both options are good for better performance. It's not considered as a advantage to have one 1GB RAM in one slot (1 x 1GB) or in two slots (2 x 512MB). Both are the same. Measuring in your RAM performance depends on how much RAM capacity you have, made (similar quality), RAM frequency, Motherboard FSB speed rating compatibility are the necessary factors that count most.

Well Vijay , both are all right.

If you have two slots for RAM you can go for 2 GB ( 1 GB each )

You can go for any of the two depending on the need and sped you want.
It wony make any harm to your computer.

Slots are made to add additional RAM power to your PC/laptop but at the end of the day all it counts how much RAM power you have, whether double slot or single slot it really does not matter Vijay. When RAM card properly inserted - the properties displays your total RAM power.
