If you can start the computer from the boot disk without receiving an error message, the damage is limited to the master boot record, the boot sector, or the NTLDR file. After Windows XP is running, immediately back up all data before you try to fix the boot sector.

First it should be identified that there are no hardware problems. Check your monitor with some other system to find out, whether it is working alright. The problem might be the data cable. If this is alright then check whether monitor shows boot menu during booting and goes to black screen, once it starts booting to OS. This is caused by video driver mismatch or graphic driver mismatch. Your solution would be to press F8 during booting and go to safe mode. Uninstall or roll back driver to resolve the problem. Restart. The windows will restart with standard graphic driver. Physically check the graphic chip or if it is onboard with heatsink, check mother board manual. Insert the motherboard cd and install the graphic driver. This will correct the problem. Later on update the driver and if possible update firmware of graphic chipset.
