A .torrent file is a file that contains the basic information about a file or set of files. This includes the file names, sizes, the date created and some other information. The torrent file also contains an info hash - which is basically just a unique code for that torrent. No other set of file(s) will have the same info hash as this one. The final thing contained inside the torrent is a list of trackers. If you have some torrent files, you can't open them in a text editor because they are encoded. How to use it?
Downloading with a torrent is actually very simple. You just need a rightly set torrent client (setting your connection speed is usually all you need to set). Then you open the torrent file inside your client, set a place where you want to download desired files and then just wait till it's downloaded. Downloading with a torrent is no more complicated than using any other p2p application, but even simpler.

Basically you need to download a torrent client, I recument uTorrent (google it) there is no need to instal it, just have it on your desktop.
Then find a torrent (again, google is your friend), click it, download it and then when it asks you what program to open it with choose uTorrent (or other client as you chose) then click ok.
Now wait! Anything from 5 mins to 5 weeks depending on the size of the file, your connection speed, the number of seeds and more.

It is far superior to limewire, I have never gotten a virus from torrents whereas limewire itself contains a virus!

BTW, downloading copy-righted material is illegal, only download freeware or non copy-righted material (cough).

Well Rakesh , BitTorrent / Torrent is a peer-to-peer program developed by Bram Cohen and BitTorrent, Inc. used for uploading and downloading files via the BitTorrent protocol. BitTorrent was the first client written for the protocol.

BitTorrent is often nicknamed Mainline by developers denoting its official origins. Version 4.20 of the client was dubbed Allegro by BitTorrent Inc., in reference to protocol extensions developed by the company to accelerate download performance and ISP manageability.[

Steps to use it :

1. Find a torrent program that will suit your needs, three choices are uTorrent, Azureus, or BitTorrent. There are plenty of others available though.
2. Follow the instructions on downloading and installing the said client.
3. Go to a torrent site and search for a file you want to download (ScrapeTorrent is an example). You can however search on Google for many more.
4. Once you have found the desired file on the torrent site, click the "Download This Torrent" (or however they word it). Usually, the web browser's file download manager will ask what to do with this file. You want to open the file with your torrent program.
5. If it doesn't open that way, just save the .Torrent file to an easy to locate place. Then open your torrent client and use the "Open Torrent" feature.
