What is spam, and how they affect our system?  

Spamming is the abuse of electronic messaging systems to indiscriminately send unsolicited bulk messages. While the most widely recognized form of spam is e-mail spam, the term is applied to similar abuses in other media: instant messaging spam, Usenet newsgroup spam, Web search engine spam, spam in blogs, wiki spam, Online classified ads spam, mobile phone messaging spam, Internet forum spam, junk fax transmissions, and file sharing network spam.
Spamming remains economically viable because advertisers have no operating costs beyond the management of their mailing lists, and it is difficult to hold senders accountable for their mass mailings. Because the barrier to entry is so low, spammers are numerous, and the volume of unsolicited mail has become very high. The costs, such as lost productivity and fraud, are borne by the public and by Internet service providers, which have been forced to add extra capacity to cope with the deluge. Spamming is widely reviled, and has been the subject of legislation in many jurisdictions.[citation needed]

Hi, well spam is a major problem today. What spam is basically is a scam whose aim is to fool you into thinking that it is something while it is not. Spamming is also used in emails as sending a lot of emails of the same topic.
Well the intent of spam is like that an advertisement. What its aim is to get as many people to their site as possible.
This works in 2 ways, 1 because they will send so many mails to virtually everyone whose email addresses they find they will hope that at least some are fooled into click on the mails and direct to their site.
2nd thing which happens implicitly is something to do with SEO - Search Engine Optimization. What basically spam does it that it would link to their site in as many places as possible. For google it is kind of simple, a site or keyword that is very commonly found is a high rank keyword. So spam helps their site to get a higher page rank by the use of back links.

spam refers to junk e-mail or irrelevant postings to a newsgroup or bulletin board. The unsolicited e-mail messages you receive about refinancing your home, reversing aging, and losing those extra pounds are all considered to be spam. Spamming other people is definitely not cool and is one of the most notorious violations of Internet etiquette (or "netiquette").

spam is generally mails which were sent for advertisement purposes... probably u recieved hundered of mails from unknown people on things u r not interested... how they effect is they consume internet bandwidth... most important it waste your time.....
