ASU UTO is hosting Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Standard Edition. Any ASU department may request a SharePoint site for their use.

SharePoint is intended to empower teams through online collaborative workspaces. SharePoint provides many features out of the box including the following:

* Document Library
* Wiki Library
* Discussion Board
* Shared Calendar
* Tasks
* Surveys
* Web Pages

Many of these web based features can also synchronize with Outlook and provide RSS feeds for fast access. Customized alerts help users stay in contact and aware of changes to important information. Additional tools can also be created by using custom lists or writing asp.net applications. No coding is necessary to use all the features previously listed. Additional web based applications can be developed and run as part of SharePoint. SharePoint is not a replacement for a fileserver. Documents that are no longer being worked on should be stored elsewhere. The default maximum upload size for a site is 50mb.

SharePoint is a content management system, but customers want collaboration, search, and Exchange type functions. So Microsoft engineers working on SharePoint pile on the functions and end up with two products, confusing most enterprise customers.
