Reverberation, or reverb for short, refers to the way sound waves reflect off various surfaces before reaching the listener's ear. The example on the right shows one person (the sound source) speaking to another person in a small room. Although the sound is projected most strongly toward the listener, sound waves also project in other directions and bounce off the walls before reaching the listener. Sound waves can bounce backwards and forwards many times before they die out. When sound waves reflect off walls, two things happen: They take longer to reach the listener. They lose energy (get quieter) with every bounce.

Reverberation is the persistence of sound in a particular space after the original sound is removed. When sound is produced in a space, a large number of echoes build up and then slowly decay as the sound is absorbed by the walls and air, creating reverberation, or reverb. This is most noticeable when the sound source stops but the reflections continue, decreasing in amplitude, until they can no longer be heard. Large chambers, especially such as cathedrals, gymnasiums, indoor swimming pools, large caves, etc., are examples of spaces where the reverberation time is long and can clearly be heard. Different types of music tend to sound best with reverberation times appropriate to their characteristics.

When sound waves reflect off walls, two things happen: They take longer to reach the listener. They lose energy (get quieter) with every bounce. The listener hears the initial sound directly from the source followed by the reflected waves. The reflections are essentially a series of very fast echoes, although to be accurate, the term "echo" usually means a distinct and separate delayed sound. The echoes in reverberation are merged together so that the listener interprets reverb as a single effect. In most rooms the reflected waves will scatter and be absorbed very quickly. People are seldom consciously aware of reverb, but subconsciously we all know the difference between "inside sound" and "outside sound". Outside locations, of course, have no walls and virtually no reverb unless you happen to be close to reflective surfaces. Some rooms result in more reverb than others. The obvious example is a hall with large, smooth reflective walls. When the hall is empty, reverb is most pronounced. When the hall is full of people, they absorb a lot of sound waves so reverb is reduced.

Reverb is a type of digital signal processing that produces a continuous wash of echoing sound, simulating an acoustic space such as a concert hall. A Reverb simulates the component of sound that results from reflections from surrounding walls or objects. It is in effect a room simulator. Some people think it's just a delay effect with some filters, but it's way more complex than that. Reverb effects (software plugins or external hardware units) provide an interface to their changeable parameters that need some explaining. Blank concrete will reflect sound quite well across the frequency spectrum. A large thick curtain or padded walls will reflect sound poorly. A large club filled with people sounds completely different from an empty one. People, comfy chairs, curtains, carpets, beds and many more objects reflect only part of the sound that hits them.

Reverb (short for reverberation) is the acoustic environment that surrounds a sound. Natural reverb exists everywhere. Whether the space being described is a bathroom or a gymnasium, the essential characteristics remain the same. Reverb is composed of a series of tightly-spaced echoes. The number of echoes and the way that they decay play a major role in shaping the sound that you hear. Many other factors influence the sound of a reverberant space. These include the dimensions of the actual space (length, width, and height), the construction of the space (such as whether the walls are hard or soft and whether the floor is carpetted), and diffusion (what the sound bounces off of). In addition to natural reverb, software synthesis of reverberation is also possible. Many audio cards, synthesizers, dedicated effects processors, and digital audio applications can create reverb, simulating both natural and supernatural environments. For example, one could create the reverb for a room fifty feet long, five feet wide, with a four-foot ceiling, lined with carpet. The synthesis of reverb by a digital signal processing (DSP) algorithm usually attempts to mimic the way a real acoustic space works. The algorithm designers simulate the early reflections, the compounding of echoes, and the decay of high versus low frequencies when designing their product. Of course, the more processing power and speed available, the more complex and potentially realistic a reverb signal can be created.
