The Open Grid Services Architecture (OGSA) describes an architecture for a service-oriented grid computing environment for business and scientific use, developed within the Global Grid Forum (GGF). OGSA is based on several other Web service technologies, notably WSDL and SOAP, but it aims to be largely agnostic in relation to the transport-level handling of data.

Open Grid Services Architecture (OGSA) is a set of standards defining the way in which information is shared among diverse components of large, heterogeneous grid systems. In this context, a grid system is a scalable wide area network (WAN) that supports resource sharing and distribution. OGSA is a trademark of the Open Grid Forum. OGSA definitions and criteria apply to hardware, platforms and software in standards-based grid computing. The OGSA is, in effect, an extension and refinement of the service-oriented architecture (SOA). The OGSA addresses ongoing issues and challenges such as authentication, authorization, policy negotiation and enforcement, administration of service-level agreements, management of virtual organizations and customer data integration. For a Web service to be considered a grid service, it must allow clients to easily discover, update, modify and delete information about the service's state, define how the service evolves and ensure ongoing compatibility with other services. The goal is to optimize communication and interoperability among resources of all types.

OGSA stands for Open Grid Services Architecture represents an evolution towards a Grid system architecture based on Web services concepts and technologies.Since the release of the Globus Toolkit 3.0, the Globus Project offers an open source collection of Grid services that follow OGSA architectural principles. The Globus Toolkit also offers a development environment for producing new Grid services that follow OGSA principles. OGSA is a product of the Grid community at large, and it has a major focal point in the Global Grid Forum (GGF). Members of the Globus Alliance have made significant contributions to the development of OGSA. This page provides information on the status of OGSA work. OGSA (Open Grid Services Architecture) is a proposed set of standards for ensuring quality of service across a grid computing network. Building on concepts and technologies from the Grid and Web services communities, this architecture defines a uniform exposed service semantics (the Grid service); defines standard mechanisms for creating, naming, and discovering transient Grid service instances; provides location transparency and multiple protocol bindings for service instances; and supports integration with underlying native platform facilities.
