What is HDV? 

High Definition Video. HDV is a "consumer high-definition video format" proposed by a consortium of manufacturers. These companies proposed the basic format specifications in July of 2003, and the formal announcement of the format came in a press release from the HDV consortium on 30 September 2003. HDV is native 16:9 with supported frame rates of 60i (frames-per-second interlaced), 30p (progressive), 50i, and 25p. All HDV variants record to existing standard DV format digital video cassettes, the most popular form factor of which is the Mini-DV shell. The transport stream interface conforms to IEEE 1394 (FireWire). HDV1 (from JVC) is a 19 megabit-per-second MPEG-2 transport stream with a resolution of 1280 pixels wide by 720 pixels tall. HDV2 (from Sony and Canon) is a 25 megabit-per-second MPEG-2 transport stream with a resolution of 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels tall.

HDV is an inexpensive high-definition video recording format which uses MPEG2 compression to fit HD content onto the same DV or MiniDV tapes originally developed for standard definition recording. The compression used results in some quality compromises compared to higher bandwidth HD recording formats, but has still proved useful for many purposes including several popular TV shows. (However, most TV shows shot in HD are recorded using higher-end formats.)

HDV(High Definition Video) is the high-definition, wide screen version of the DV magnetic tape format. Like DV, HDV recording moves at a constant data rate and stores data on the same DV and MiniDV tapes as SD camcorders. HDV uses 4:2:0 color sampling, MPEG-2 video compression and MPEG-1 audio compression (16-bit stereo).

HDV is a new recording format that allows for High Definition (HD) footage to be recorded onto standard MiniDV cassettes. Instead of using DV compression, it uses “Long GOP MPEG2” which allows for the higher data compression that is needed to fit HDTV footage onto the same tape at the same data rates. There are currently two versions of HDV, 720P/30 (720 lines, 30 frames per second) and 1080i/60 (1080 lines/60fields per second). The Sony HVR-Z1U uses the 1080i/60 HDV standard.

HDV is the next step up from Mini DV, which has been used in consumer digital camcorders for several years. The HDV technology allows high-definition video to be recorded on a Mini DV tape, using MPEG-2 compression. Of course, recording in high-definition requires an HD camcorder, such as the Sony HDR-FX1 or the JVC GR-HD1. These cameras are significantly more expensive than their Mini DV counterparts, but can capture much higher quality video. HDV uses a native 16:9 widescreen format, with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. This is a substantial improvement over Mini DV, which records video in a 4:3 format, with a maximum resolution of 500 horizontal lines. Most HDV camcorders allow the user to record in standard DV as well, but if you shell out a couple thousand dollars extra for a HDV camcorder, you might as well shoot everything in HD.
