A flowchart is one of the seven basic tools of quality control, which also includes the histogram, Pareto chart, check sheet, control chart, cause-and-effect diagram, and scatter diagram (see Quality Management Glossary).

They are commonly used in business/economic presentations to help the audience visualize the content better, or to find flaws in the process. Alternatively, one can use Nassi-Shneiderman diagrams.

A flowchart is described as "cross-functional" when the page is divided into different "lanes" describing the control of different organizational units.

A symbol appearing in a particular "lane" is within the control of that organizational unit.

This technique allows the analyst to locate the responsibility for performing an action or making a decision correctly, allowing the relationship between different organizational units with responsibility over a single process.

A flowchart is a formalized graphic representation of a program logic sequence, work or manufacturing process, organization chart, or similar formalized structure. In computer programming, flowcharts were formerly used to describe each processing path in a program (the main program and various subroutines that could be branched to). Programmers were admonished to always flowchart their logic rather than carry it in their heads. With the advent of object-oriented programming (OOP) and visual development tools, the traditional program flowchart is much less frequently seen. However, there are new flowcharts that can be used for the data or class modeling that is used in object-oriented programming.

Traditional program flowcharting involves the use of simple geometric symbols to represent the beginning or end of a program (an oval), a process (a rectangle), a decision (a diamond), or an I/O process (a parallelogram).

The pictorial representation of the programs or the algorithm is known as flowcharts.

A flowchart consists of a set of ‘flowchart symbols’ connected by arrows. Each symbol contains information about what must be done at that point & the arrow shows the ‘flow of execution’ of the algorithm i.e. they show the order in which the instructions must be executed.

The purpose of using flowcharts is to graphically present the logical flow of data in the system and defining major phases of processing along with the various media to be used.

Flowcharts are of three types:

# When dealing with a process flow chart, two separate stages of the process should be considered: the finished product and the making of the product. In order to analyze the finished product or how to operate the process, flow charts tend to use simple and easily recognizable symbols.
