Plasma television technology is based loosely on the fluorescent light bulb. The display itself consists of cells. Within each cell two glass panels are separated by a narrow gap in which neon-xenon gas is injected and sealed in plasma form during the manufacturing process. The gas is electrically charged at specific intervals when the Plasma set is in use. The charged gas then strikes red, green, and blue phosphors, thus creating a television image. Each group of red, green, and blue phosphors is called a pixel (picture element).
Although Plasma television technology eliminate the need for the bulky picture tube and electron beam scanning of traditional televisions, because it still employs the burning of phosphors to generate an image, Plasma televisions still suffer from some of the drawbacks of traditional televisions, such as heat generation and screen-burn of static images.
LCD TV Overview
LCD televisions, on the other hand, use a different technology (see also question #1 for this same explanation).
Basically, LCD panels are made of two layers of transparent material, which are polarized, and are "glued" together. One of the layers is coated with a special polymer that holds the individual liquid crystals. Current is then passed through individual crystals, which allow the crystals to pass or block light to create images. LCD crystals do not produce their own light, so an external light source, such as florescent bulb is needed for the image created by the LCD to become visible to the viewer.
Unlike standard CRT and Plasma televisions, since there are no phosphors that light up, less power is need for operation and the light source in an LCD television generates less heat than a Plasma or traditional television. Also, because of the nature of LCD technology, there is no radiation emitted from the screen itself.

Although both types (Plasma & LCD) of televisions are flat and thin, they employ different technology in an attempt to deliver similar results. Plasma television technology is based loosely on the fluorescent light bulb. The display itself consists of cells. For Plasma televisions, the advantages over LCD, are: Better contrast ratio, better ability to render deep blacks, more color depth, better motion tracking (response time), and more availability in very large screen sizes. LCD television advantages include no burn-in susceptibility, cooler running, less screen glare, more functional at high altitudes, longer display life (although improvements are being made in Plasma screen life), looks better in brightly lit rooms.

comparing plasma and LCD TVs, you're actually comparing their two competing technologies. Both technologies achieve similar things (i.e. crystal-clear, color-filled pictures) and come in similar designs (i.e. super-thin housing). However, there're some key differences

Screen Size Screen sizes range from 32 inches to 60 inches. PLASMA

Sizes range from 13 inches to 46 inches, but larger screens are coming out soon.LCD

Colour Saturation In plasma TVs, each pixel contains red, green, and blue elements, which work in conjunction to create 16.77 million colours. Colour information is more accurately reproduced with plasma TV technology than it is with any other display technology.

LCD displays reproduce colours by manipulating light waves and subtracting colours from white light. This makes it more difficult for maintaining colour accuracy and vibrancy. But, LCD TVs have colour information benefits from the higher-than-average number of pixels per square inch found in their displays (especially when compared to plasma TVs).

Many tiny cells located between two panels of glass hold an inert mixture of noble gases. The gas in the cells is electrically turned into a plasma which then excites phosphors to emit light. Plasma displays are commonly confused with LCDs, another lightweight flatscreen display but with very different technology.
A liquid crystal display (LCD) is an electro-optical amplitude modulator realized as a thin, flat display device made up of any number of color or monochrome pixels arrayed in front of a light source or reflector. It is often utilized in battery-powered electronic devices because it uses very small amounts of electric power.

well, Plasma and LCD TVs are the latest trend in home entertainment. Both offer unrivaled picture quality and resolution, while doing away with the bulkiness of the older rear-projection technologies. But with all of the hype surrounding these two types of televisions, what is the difference between them? Although they look- and are virtually priced- the same, they are not.
There differences are found in the way in which they display their pictures. Plasma TV technology is made up of hundreds of thousands of little pixels, each capable of displaying red, green, and blue colors. A plasma monitor often consists of two panels, which are filled with an inert gas, such as xenon or neon. When the pixels are excited by pulses of electricity, the gas becomes liquid, thus generating light. This light in turn then illuminates the pixels, causing them to display the appropriate color to form a picture.
LCD panels function in a very similar manner. A panel of thin-film-transmitters, or TFT, sends electricity to cells filled with liquid crystal. When the cells are struck by the electricity, the liquid crystals allow light to filter through. Unlike the pixels found in plasma TVs, LCD monitors create color by blocking out the appropriate wavelengths from white light.
So which is better? The answer to this question depends upon what you plan to use TV for. Do you just want to use it to watch movies and television? If so, then a plasma TV might be best, because they are capable of a higher better color saturation and contrast than their LCD counterparts and for displaying moving images. If you plan in spending a lot of time showing digital photography or plan on using the monitor with your computer, then a LCD display might be better suited to these purposes.
Both plasma and LCD technologies each have their advantages and disadvantages and your decision should ultimately be based on your monitor's application.

When choosing between plasma and LCD TVs, you're actually selecting between two competing technologies, both of which achieve similar features (i.e., ,bright crystal-clear images, super color-filled pictures) and come in similar packages (i.e., 3.5 inch depth flat screen casing). To complicate the decision-making process further, price and size are two previous considerations that are rapidly becoming non-issues as LCD TVs are now being made in larger sizes and at competing prices with plasma.

Whether spread across a flat-panel screen or placed in the heart of a projector, all LCD displays come from the same technological background. A matrix of thin-film transistors (TFTs) supplies voltage to liquid-crystal-filled cells sandwiched between two sheets of glass. When hit with an electrical charge, the crystals untwist to an exact degree to filter white light generated by a lamp behind the screen (for flat-panel TVs) or one projecting through a small LCD chip (for projection TVs). LCD TVs reproduce colors through a process of subtraction: They block out particular color wavelengths from the spectrum of white light until they're left with just the right color. And, it's the intensity of light permitted to pass through this liquid-crystal matrix that enables LCD televisions to display images chock-full of colors-or gradations of them.

Well, picture-quality-wise, you'd want to go with the one that is phosphor-based. Phosphor-based TV sets can reproduce the color black and actually make it look black-some TVs (e.g. LCDs) cannot physically make black. They can only make a very very dark blue. Watch a plasma and LCD side-by-side in the electronics store when the signal fades to "black" and you'll see what I mean. Sure, you might not notice this problem in your home when you don't have a hundred other sets to compare it to, but the color black is what allows you to see detailed edges (because of shadowing, etc.) Overall, this enhances the picture greatly. Hence, I point you to plasma. However, ever notice the fact that plasma televisions are almost like mirrors in the way they show every bit of possible reflection in a room? Well, since there is a very hot material inside the unit, the front must be made of glass to hold it in.
LCDs, on the other hand, are great with reflection because they have a plastic front (due to the fact that there is no phosphor inside). This is a great advantage if you have a lot of ambient/outdoor light shining into your room.
Now, you've probably already heard what I've just mentioned, but it is very important. Let's say you want better picture, so you get a plasma... well, if that pretty screen is full of light glare during the day, the plasma is only serving its full purpose at night. So... go LCD.

There’s never been a better time to take the plunge into high-definition television (HDTV). Prices have fallen while technology has improved. Whether you're interested in a liquid crystal display (LCD) or plasma HDTV, the choices are plentiful and the pictures are beautiful. There are some key differences, however, that might sway individual consumers one way or the other.

In the past there were a number of key advantages in buying plasma over LCD HDTV. Plasma HDTV was less expensive in larger screen sizes, produced far better blacks than LCD technology, and was considered better for sports fans because action remained clear and crisp. LCD provided a sharper static picture, but was confined to smaller screen sizes and tended to blur slow panning shots or action. Today’s quality LCD HDTVs have largely corrected these problems while remaining competitively priced through the 55-inch (140cm) screen size. In many ways the comparison is a draw and might come down to just one or two points that make LCD or plasma the better choice for personal needs.

With the rising cost of electricity, a major plus of LCD HDTV is that it takes less power to run than plasma. One popular 52-inch (132cm) LCD HDTV model available today uses 219 watts of power, while a comparable 52-inch (132cm) plasma uses up to 695 watts. If the HDTV will get minimal use, this might not be a factor. For households with children who will be watching TV day and night, a three-fold difference in electricity can add up. This can also be a consideration for seniors on a fixed income.

Another factor is reflection or glare. LCD TV features a plastic screen that is non-reflective, making it ideal for brightly lit rooms like kitchens. It’s also a good choice for living rooms or dens that have windows, sliders, or doors that tend to reflect on the set. Even lamp placement can cause reflection. When it’s not desirable to rearrange furniture, consider the LCD. Plasma HDTVs are better suited to low-lit viewing rooms, though manufacturers have countered this LCD advantage by adding non-reflective coatings to some plasma models.

For fast action and sports, plasma HDTV continues to hold a slight advantage over LCD, though this isn’t the deciding factor it once was. Plasma HDTV displays moving images, fast action and slow pans with equal clarity. Some LCD models feature a 120 Hz refresh rate, intended to eliminate blur in fast images by repainting the screen twice as many times per second as the standard 60 Hz refresh rate. Models with this feature are generally more expensive and some critics claim the difference is negligible, but even without the 120 Hz feature, LCD has improved in this area.

Plasma still wins the prize for better overall static contrast ratios with the ability to produce deeper blacks and brighter whites at the same time within the same scene. LCD has come a long way in this regard, however, and better quality LCD HDTVs with good static contrast ratio specifications will probably more than satisfy most consumers on this point. Plasma is also known for "more natural" coloring, while LCD reds and greens can tend towards hot. A past problem with plasma was burn in — residual imaging from a static network logo or game counsel, though this has been all but eliminated.

Plasma sets emit more heat than LCDs and most have an internal fan to cool the set when needed. Additionally, plasma HDTVs are also heavier than a comparable LCD.

In terms of longevity, both HDTVs will last long enough to satisfy most consumers. Plasma sets have manufacturer ratings of about 60,000 hours to half-life. This represents the point at which the television picture has dimmed to half of its original brightness — but still watchable. LCDs are also rated at about 60,000 hours, but rather than half-life this is the point where the costly backlight will likely burn out. It will take 27 years to get to the 60,000 hour mark watch

LCD and Plasma. What’s under the hood?

To be honest, there isn’t much of a hood to look under. But inside the sleek and thin exterior, plasma TVs employ a matrix of tiny plasma gas cells that are charged by precise electrical voltage to create a picture.

In the case of LCD panels, liquid crystal display make up the screen. Imagine liquid crystal pressed between two glass plates to which varying electrical charge is applied to create an image. That’s an LCD television.

Despite the advances made in LCD and plasma technology, however, there are experts and gamers (they really do use TVs a lot) maintain that CRT (cathode ray tube or your regular TV) still offers the best quality.

* If an image is left on the screen too long, LCD screens are less likely to experience the image being burned into the screen. If this does occur, it’s easier to repair than other types of TV’s.

Con’s

* The viewing angle of an LCD TV is typically not as great as Plasma but the difference is not great enough to make a huge difference.
* LCD TV’s can sometimes get dead pixels which aren’t typically covered under warranty. Although they are very small, they can become very annoying.
* Brightness levels aren’t as great as Plasma and it’s not possible to display darks quite as dark.
