Scientologists argue that the person being audited is said to be completely aware of everything that happens and becomes even more alert as auditing progresses. Therefore Auditing is not referred to as something "done to" the Preclear, but rather involving her/his active participation. By using communication alone, the auditor must direct the Preclear’s attention to past moments of pain, unconsciousness or misemotion (negative emotion). The most general definition of an audit is an evaluation of a person, organization, system, process, project or product. Audits are performed to ascertain the validity and reliability of information, and also provide an assessment of a system's internal control. The goal of an audit is to the person/organization/system etc. under evaluation based on work done on a test basis.
