Having different lan cards in different computers is not a problem in networking but the main thing is, they should be installed properly. The second thing is networking cable - it has to be a cross cable. The third is OS. If they are both same then it becomes easier but if you want to network with backward OS's then you will see that the advanced OS can see the files of the computers with backward OS but the other cannot. Here say you have win98 and XP, then even after you have shared them XP will be able to see the 98 files but 98 will not be able access XP files. Here you make a network sharing diskette in XP and run it in 98 and follow the wizard. Then you can see the shared files.
Follow the golden rules:

Since you have not mentioned your OS, we are assuming you are using Windows XP. The host machine, the one that will connect to the Internet, will require two LAN cards, one to connect to the Internet and the other to connect to your home network.

Since you have not mentioned your OS, we are assuming you are using Windows XP. The host machine, the one that will connect to the Internet, will require two LAN cards, one to connect to the Internet and the other to connect to your home network.
