Creating a data CD

1. Insert a blank CD-R or CD-RW into the drive.

2. Find, highlight, and right-click the file(s) you want to copy, and select Send To, then select CD-RW Drive or CD-R Drive.

Alternatively, you can drag the file to the CD-R Drive or CD-RW Drive icon in the My Computer window or Windows Explorer.

Creating an audio CD

Using Windows Media Player, you can copy .mp3 files to CDs. You can also copy tracks from another audio CD.

1. Open Windows Media Player, and on the left, click the Copy to CD or Device button.

2. From the "Music to copy" drop-down box, select the playlist or album with the desired songs. Alternatively, select All audio to bring up a list of all audio files currently on the hard drive.

3. Select the titles to copy to the CD, and then click the Copy Music button.

4. Wait for the CD to finish writing, and then eject it.

1. Put the source CD (the CD that you are copying from) into the CD drive.

2. Open Windows Media Player, and on the left, click the Copy From CD button.

3. Check the boxes beside the tracks you are copying.

To write a CD you need to:

connect a SCSI CD writer to your computer. If your operating system is SunOS / Solaris, you will need to install scg - the SCSI General Driver. This is used by the kernel to control the CD writer.
use the mkisofs program to create a disk image of the data to be backed up,
use the cdrecord program to write the disk image to a CD.
optionally use the sformat program to verify the data on the CD.
Notes:

Solaris 8 now includes the program CD Read/Write 1.0 on the Software Supplement CD. I haven't tried it, but you might find it easier to install than CDrecord. If you do try CD Read/Write, the only part of this page which may still be relevant to you are the instructions covering mkisofs.
An alternative to steps 1, 3 and 4 above is to copy the disk image to a Macintosh or PC which has some other program to write a CD from a disk image.
Check that your computer has a SCSI port! Sun Ultra 5 and 10's for example do not come standard with a SCSI card - you need to install your own if you want one.
Check that your CD writer is supported. The README file in the cdrecord-1.9 distribution contains a list of supported drives. There is also a CDrecord-1.8 drive compatibility list. (I think this list applies to all versions of CDrecord).

There is an optional fbk driver available at the ftp site. You don't need this unless you want to mount a disk image as a virtual file system. I do not have it installed on my system.

Software Versions:
These notes were originally written with reference to CDrecord-1.6.1 and mkisofs-1.11. I have since updated them for CDrecord-1.9, however the method of installation does not appear to have changed significantly between versions 1.6.1 and 1.9.
The current version has changed its name to cdrtools 2.0, but I haven't had a look at that yet.
CDrecord-1.9 includes mkisofs-1.13. Eric Youngdale wrote the first versions (1993 ... 1998) of mkisofs but recent development has been by Jörg Schilling. Also note that Solaris 8 comes with mkisofs version 1.11, so if you install version 1.13 on Solaris 8 you'll need to be carefull to specify the path to the newer version to ensure that you are actually using version 1.13. (Or just delete the version that comes preinstalled with Solaris 8).

To write to a cd or a dvd use k3b.

K3b is a CD and DVD authoring application for the KDE desktop for Unix-like computer operating systems. It provides a graphical user interface to perform most CD/DVD burning tasks like creating an Audio CD from a set of audio files or copying a CD/DVD, as well as more advanced tasks such as burning eMoviX CD/DVDs. It can also perform direct disc-to-disc copies. The program has many default settings which can be customized by more experienced users. The actual disc recording in K3b is done by the command line utilities cdrecord or wodim, cdrdao, and growisofs. As of version 1.0, K3b features a built-in DVD ripper.
