Broadband Internet access, often shortened to just broadband, is high-speed Internet access—typically contrasted with dial-up access over a modem.

Dial-up modems are generally only capable of a maximum bitrate of 56 kbit/s (kilobits per second) and require the full use of a telephone line—whereas broadband technologies supply at least double this speed and generally without disrupting telephone use. The official definition of broadband (also called "high speed Internet access") is "data transmission speeds exceeding 200 kilobits per second" (or 200 Kbps) in at least one direction, typically downstream. With the theoretical limit of dial up Internet being 56 Kbps and a more realistic maximum speed being 48 Kbps, it's easy to see that dial up Internet access can never be qualified as broadband. Simply said with dial up you cant access 200 plus Kbps offered by Broadband conection.

For maximum benefit, first check with your ISP to see if they support V.92 modem connections. Maximum benefit is only obtained when both ends of connection are using V.92 with V.44 compression protocols.
