WARNING! Before you reinstall your Operating System, you must back up all irreplaceable files on your computer, such as e-mail, papers, artwork, music, saved games, etc. The processes listed below will permanently erase all contents of your hard drive, and anything not in backup will be lost.
There are two types of re-installation available in Windows XP -Repair installation and clean installation.
Repair installation which you can do via booting from XP setup CD won't format/erase your HDD, it just restores the OS to the default files and it won't modify/delete the existing program installation/other files/folders. To do the repair installation, insert your Win XP CD in the drive and restart the system. Make the system boot from the CD. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot and continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.
Instead if you opt for 'Clean installation' (by running the OS setup again in already existing OS itself and choose the 'Clean installation'), it'll format your C:\ (if you select it by default) and (re)install the OS along with the default program files freshly. Alternatively, Enter the XP setup by restarting the system and booting from the XP installation CD. Bypass the repair prompt. Existing partitions and the unpartitioned spaces (if any) are listed for each physical hard disk. Press D to delete an existing partition. When the partition is deleted, select the remaining unpartitioned space, and then press C to create the new partition. Allocate the size for each partition. Then you have to format (by either FAT32 or NTFS file system) it and initialize for your new Windows XP (re)installation
