Yes, you need to keep updating the dictionary
and if you're not sure of the spell checking then
use one of the free dictionary sites to verify the spelling and then add the word to your Firefox dictionary. I have added over 3000 entries to mine so far. It's not that good of a dictionary but with time and patience, you can make Firefox bend to your will; that is it will recognize more and more words as you keep adding them. I'm pleased with it after I have tweaked it for these many months now.
