During the high definition optical disc format war, Blu-ray Disc competed with the HD DVD format. On February 19, 2008, Toshiba — the main company supporting HD DVD — announced it would no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders,[4] leading almost all other HD DVD supporters to follow suit, effectively naming Blu-ray the victor of the format war.

This is a next-generation optical disk format jointly developed by thirteen leading consumer electronics and personal computer (PC) companies to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition television (HDTV).
Blu-ray Disc is a large capacity optical technology that allows the recording, rewriting, and playback of up to 25 Gigabytes of data on a single sided, single layer 12mm disc. As the technology name implies, Blu-ray Disc utilizes a blue (actually blue-violet) laser to read the pits and lands. As explained in our previous editorial, this color is the result of the laser wavelength: 405nm.
By adopting this short wavelength, it can record over two hours of digital high-definition video and more than thirteen hours of standard definition pictures on a single disc.

A DVD disc stores up to 4.7 GB (gigabytes) of data on one side, the Blu-ray Disc can hold as much as 25 GB on a single side, giving it more than five times the storage capacity.

Because each recording layer of a single-side, dual-layer Blu-ray Disc is capable of storing 25 GB of data, the total capacity is an astonishing 50 GB per disc. In other words, one Blu-ray Disc can store as much data as ten DVD discs.

Because the Blu-ray Disc data layer is closer to the surface of the disc, compared to the DVD standard, it was at first more vulnerable to scratches. The first discs were housed in cartridges for protection. Advances in polymer technology eventually made the cartridges unnecessary

They can save upto 25-300 Gb.they are CD's.
