well, Hewlett-Packard Company today announced that VeriSign, Inc. now is a strategic partner in the HP Praesidium partner program. VeriSign's participation in the program will immediately enable qualified international banking customers using HP VirtualVault to quickly and easily employ the strongest encryption legally available for export to date for all their international business-to-business and business-to-consumer applications over intranets, extranets and the Internet.
The combination of HP VirtualVault and VeriSign's Global Server ID lets international banks with servers in the United States and abroad use 128-bit SSL sessions to conduct financial transactions more securely, even with export versions of popular browsers, without having to first obtain specific U.S. government approval. HP and VeriSign are authorized by the U.S. Department of Commerce to provide Secure Server IDs to qualified HP VirtualVault customers, eliminating the need for them to go through the time-consuming process of obtaining approval themselves.
"We're committed to working with leading technology providers such as VeriSign to deliver robust enterprise security solutions globally," said Roberto Medrano, general manager for HP's Internet Security Operation. "Our companies' combined solution offers international banks a more secure solution for providing confidential information over the Internet."
The newer export versions of both Microsoft(R) and Netscape Web browsers are programmed to enable strong encryption only when they encounter a VeriSign Global Server ID. Otherwise, they are limited to standard 40-bit encryption.
"We're pleased to be able to provide enhanced security through stronger encryption for HP's international banking customers as the first tangible result of our alliance," said Richard Yanowitch, vice president of marketing for VeriSign. "In the future, we intend to offer tighter integration of VeriSign's services with HP products to provide HP customers with complete public key infrastructure solutions."
According to VeriSign, 128-bit encryption provides several trillion times better security than 40-bit encryption. Previously, if either the server or client software were exported outside of the United States, the strongest encryption that could be used without violating U.S. export law was only 40 bits; international enterprises couldn't use strong encryption for global communications without U.S. government permission. VeriSign was the first Certificate Authority to provide 128-bit Digital IDs that comply with U.S. export regulations.
