Step 1:

Click Start => Run => type “gpedit.msc” without quotes and then press enter. A group policy editor will be opened.

Then go to: Local Computer Policy => Computer Configuration => Administrative Templates => Network => QOS Packet Scheduler => Limit Reservable Bandwidth (Double click on it)

Step 3:

When you double click on Limit Reservable Bandwidth it will say it is not configured. But the truth is under the ‘Explain’ Tab i.e.”By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20% of the bandwidth of a connection but you can use this setting to override the default.” So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20

You need to change your internet plan to improve your internet speed. However, if you want to improve your download speed, you can try a software called "Internet Download Manager". This tool can greatly improve your downloading speed.

well, Check the speed of your router and adpater. See how much they can get up to. Most get up to 54. Your router could be shot and you may need a new one. I personally recommend netgear. Its my favorite. Also try plugging in your computer directly to your modem.
Go to Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Delete) >Click on Network Tab > Click View on Menu Bar > Select Columns > make sure Bytes Sent (uploaded) and Bytes Received (downloaded) are checked and click on OK


When you say 2 MB are you saying 2 Megabits or 2 Megabytes

8 bits = 1 byte

16 Megabits = 2 Megabytes

As for downloading at only 250kb that may be because of whom (the website) your downloading from.
2.the windows task manager thing doesnt help as the sent and recieved column just rises constantly when i download something.

by recieveing, i mean the speed of broadband i am receiving from my broadband exchange (the closer you live to the exchange the higher your speed). I was told i could recieve 3.5 MB but another company (aol) told me that (when i was cancelling) the most anyone can offer me is 2MB so i want to know my speed myself. i (ovbiously) went with the sky (3.5MB) package but i dont know how to determine whether i have 2Mb or 3.5MB available to me.

also how to improve my speed would be nice. i am told the speed can also depend on the wiring in the house so i think it would be better to go wireless to make sure that isnt a problem.

well, Check the speed of your router and adpater. See how much they can get up to. Most get up to 54. Your router could be shot and you may need a new one. I personally recommend netgear. Its my favorite. Also try plugging in your computer directly to your modem. See how fast it gets. If it still gets 1, call your ISP and they should replace your modem for free. If its fine, pluge the wire into one of the empty ports of your router. If you are getting 1, then replace your router. If they both give you 8, then you need to replace your adapter.
