Portable hard disk lifespan?  

Well Sachin,
Lifespan of portable hard disk only depends on how you use it.
If you use them properly then they would last for 4-5 years, you should protect them from moisture & dust. You should handle it carefully.

It depends usability and situations. so the lifespan of portable hard disk is vary.

Most hard drive last 3-5 year with normal use, if it's with a portable the will depend if the portable is being moved alot or encounters vibrations frequently.
A portable hard disk is in an enclosure it gets hotter than when it is mounted in the pc. So it can decrease the lifespan. I bought a 500gb external drive and used it for backups and it died in 3 months.

actually portable hard disks are unreliable to store important data on... portable hard disks can go corrupt within a year ...infact sometimes within a couple of months from purchase. so it is always recommended to store important data on the internal hard disk. if maintained properly a portable hard disks life span can go upto 5 years .. :)

It is a mechanical device with moving parts in it.Thus the life span can not be predicted.
It will directly depend upon the usage which causes wear and tear.

Assuming you don't kick it, drop it, cover it in tea... then you'll be good for several years. Running drives constantly doesn't hurt them :)
