There are so many different types of RAM appeared over the years. Recently RAM types are:
1) SDRAM (Synchronous DRAM) - is a type of DRAM that runs in synchronization with the memory bus. It is capable of running at 133MHz. It's a popular choice for new systems in 2001.
2) DDR (Double Data Rate) RAM - didn’t catch on until about 2001 when the mainstream motherboards started supporting it. The difference between SDRAM and DDR RAM is that instead of doubling the clock rate it transfers data twice per clock cycle which effectively doubles the data rate. DDRRAM has become mainstream in the graphics card market and has become the memory standard.
3) DDR2 (Double Data Rate 2) RAM - is a newer version of DDR which is twice as fast as it's predecessor. DDR2RAM came out in mid 2003 and the first chipsets that supported DDR2 came out in mid 2004. DDR2 still is double data rate just like the original DDR however DDR2-RAM has modified signaling which enables higher speeds to be achieved.
Intel is now launching their first chipsets to support DDR3 memory.
To find out what RAM type you're system using, you may utilize tools such as 'CPU-Z' which is a freeware that gathers information on some of the main devices of your system (that incl:RAMs). It can find the memory type, capacity, frequency and timings, module(s) specification using SPD (Serial Presence Detect) : vendor, serial number, timings table. Refer here to download:

Alternatively you can run a memory test online at:
crucial.com/systemscann er/in dex.aspx
The Crucial System tool scans/analyzes your computer to find out what is already inside your system (with specifications) and get recommended upgrades.
