Green gram is dry, light, a retainer of stool, cool, sweet, causes the formation of wind in little quantity, good for the eyes and cures fever. According to "charak" and "sushrut", green gram are relatively more beneficial than the kidney beans. But practically both the types of beans are considered to be of same importance.
Very nourishing and delicious dishes are prepared from the flour of grinded green grams. It is more qualitative than the dishes made from the flour of gram pulses.
The water in which green gram are cooked are considered to have more nutritive value than the green grams itself. Although green gram causes the formation of some wind in the body but the water in which green grams are cooked do not cause the formation of wind. This water can be compared with thee nutritive value of the milk. Therefore it can be given to the patient suffering from fever due to excessive three humors, and where milk can not be given. It is prescribed by doctors as an easily digestible diet after the fever has subsided.
A semi liquid fluid made from baked green grams and then mixed parched rice, honey and sugar in it, has a curative effect in many diseases like inflammation, fever and diarrhea. It also checks vomit.
