Making your phone off speaks very loud and clear that you are either avoiding the person (situation) or try to run away from the situation or problem. You are trying to deceive the person (caller). Therefore, it is wrong to switch off (make your phone dead) your phone.

Yes it is wrong to make your phone dead . It is better the other person make his phone dead , They are hurting your feelings which is evil and painful, It is definitely curtailing your freedom of speech or action. God forbid this control. Yu are adult and have your own independence and judgement . Others should not play or control you in any way.
