Yes, it depends on the subject matter. 1. Consumable. 2. Non-consumable. For item no 2. the consumer has the right to get it repaired free of cost, can get replacement free of cost as and how the consumer court has directed.

That is a very tall order. The main thing is that the consumer is legally bound with the terms and conditions attached to the produce. That is why it is better to look before you leap. A consumer should know what is written in fine prints before succumbing to the purchase.
In many cases you will find that the terms and Conditions refere to this clause or that. That is all a way to unload what is wrong with the material.
It is seen that the manufacturer advertises in bold letters that the commodity has that plus value. But the scientific jargon is not known to all.
Say for example if you purchase a Gold Ornament they stick a decorous label ".......KDM" But in fact Cadimum known as Kadium is a harmful item which when used for soldering can do physical harm to the labour. Its effect upon the wearer is not yet certain. But, what is bad in the initial stage to the labour maybe ultimately bad for the user.
That is the reason I suggect to be inquisitive. There should be neither shame nor embarassment in seeking more information.

In order to safeguard consumer interest, 6 consumer rights were initially envisioned by consumer rights activists of the West, namely:

Right to Safety

Right to Information
Right to Choice

Right to be Heard

The Right to Redress
The right to consumer education

These rights had to be redefined keeping in mind the realities of a developing country like India. Consequently, two very important rights were added viz.:

The Right to Basic Needs and

The right to a healthy and sustained environment.

The rights of a consumer are many. Normally some consumers confuse the rights with the relief.
As a customer I have the following rights:
1. To have my precious time respected by the company's customer service department in every situation. My issue should be resolved in a single phone call or e-mail by one representative who speaks clearly, is easy to understand and has access to my customer records.
2. To be treated with courtesy and respect. After all, I paid money to the company, and have every reason to expect customer service that addresses my individual needs.
3. To have adequately trained reps who know enough to actually solve my problem. They should be able to provide me with a case number I can use for a credit if I don't receive great service. And I should be able to call or e-mail the same rep should the need arise.
4. To receive quality customer service - including an easy-to-use menu with a minimum of clutter to quickly reach a rep - or be compensated for my time and effort.
5. To rapid access to a live person at a company with sufficient staff so I'm not kept waiting on hold for more than 10 minutes. If I am, I'll receive a negotiable credit on my next bill. I also have the right to receive a negotiable credit on my next bill from the company if the first CSR doesn't have my records or can't solve my problem and has to transfer my call.
6. To get a negotiable credit if I have to speak with more than two CSRs trying to resolve my issue. I also have the right to a negotiable credit if I ask for a supervisor and none is available.
7. To receive a negotiable credit if I'm billed incorrectly and have to call or e-mail to fix the problem, or I'm given the wrong information to fix my problem by any of the reps, compelling me to call back or send another e-mail.

By consumer awareness we mean an organised and systematic movement to safe guard the interest of consumers.the need for this arose because of the liberalisation of the economy.
The Rights are:-
i)right to safety

Well Pooja the Statutory Rights Of A Consumer according to our Consumer Protection Act, 1986, guarantees the following statutory rights to the consumers-
1. The right to be protected against the marketing of goods and services which are hazardous to life and property: To simplify this it can be said that it is the duty of the manufacturers and the distributor not to supply any goods to the consumers which fails to comply with the general safety requirements in all circumstances. It is important to know that safety standards are published from time to time by the relevant authorities in relation to many types of consumer goods.
2. The right to be informed about the quality, quantity, potency, purity, standard and price of goods or services, as the case may be, so as to protect the consumer against unfair trade practices; by simplifying this right it can be said that consumers are given the right to information. This is intended to save the consumers from unfair trade practices like false and misleading descriptions about the nature and quality of goods, exaggerated statements about their power or potency, for example, that the hair oil is capable of promoting hair growth or preventing hair loss where there is no such power to an appreciable extent. It may be noted that a victim of unfair trade practices would be able to come before a Consumer Forum only if he is a consumer within the meaning of the Act. Other buyers would have to go to the Monopolies Commission under MRTP Act.
3. The right to be assured, wherever possible, access to a variety of goods and services at competitive prices; For the convenience of the consumers the Central Council has been charged with the responsibility of bringing about the organization of markets and market practices in such a way that all dealers are supplied with a variety of goods for the benefit of the consumers and that the goods with a variety are being offered at competitive prices. It is only then the consumers will have access to variety and will be able to enjoy the benefit of competitive prices.
4. The right to be heard and to be assured that consumer's interest will receive due consideration at appropriate forums; Right to be heard is not only the the foremost right of consumers it is a principle of natural justice also. The Central Council is charged with the responsibility of assuring to consumers that they would be heard as of right by appropriate forums and consumers will receive due attention and consideration from such forums.
5. The right to seek redress against unfair trade practices or restrictive trade practices or unscrupulous exploitation of consumers; The consumers have been given the right to seek redress against restrictive/unfair trade practices or unscrupulous exploitation. The right can be explained clearly by following example - where money was deposited in advance for the supply of a car within two months and the car was actually supplied some time after two months, in such situation retention of money beyond the period of two months is an unfair trade practice and the consumers can claim proper interest on the deposit for the period of delay.
6. The right to consumer education. This right is most important right because once the people are rendered conscious of their power, they may perhaps, feel energized to struggle against exploitation by manufacturers and traders. The Central Council has been charged with the responsibility to provide to the people proper education in terms of their remedies under the Act. It can be hoped that people's awareness is likely to prove a better tool for putting the trade on some level of discipline than tons of Government controls.However, consumer's strongest and the most precious right, which he keeps to the last, is the 'refusal to buy' and withdraw the patronage from the seller who always craves for it because, without it, he has none to sell.
